This series of courses provides the participant with access to SIX courses designed to help you take your Adventure Therapy dream from idea to reality.   If you have an idea or a plan for the type of Adventure Therapy program you want to build, this course walks you through six different phases to go from vision to implementation, idea to actuality!

Description

This six month program combines online training courses with group consulting to help participants grow and develop their Adventure Therapy program or practice. The series includes a 2 hour training and a 1.5 hour group consultation sessions  each month.  

Total Training hours: 12 hours

Total Group Consulting hours:  9 hours

Program overview:

AT Administration Series #1: Defining Your Mission and Understanding the Ethics 

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Content Outline:

  • Defining the mission/purpose of your AT practice
    • Define mission/purpose
    • Define population
  • Developing your strategic plan
    • Assessment of where you are currently
    • Vision for where you want to go
    • Gap analysis to solidify action plan
    • Logic model for practice
  • Understanding the ethics of providing AT
    • Clinical ethics for AT
    • Environmental ethics for AT

Group Consult # 1

Date:  June 29th, 2021 @ 4:30pm – 6pm EST

Topics: Mission/purpose, population, strategic planning/vision, ethics (General Policies and Procedures manual outline)

AT Administration Series #2: Risk Management Practices

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Instructor: Kim Sacksteder

Content Outline:

  • Risk management overview
    • Where risk comes from
    • Managing risk (retain, avoid, mitigate, transfer)
      • Informed consent, liability releases
  • Hazard assessment and risk analysis
    • Managing risks from environment
    • Managing risks from activities

    • Documenting incidents and near misses
    • Analyzing incidents and near misses
    • External review processes

Group Consult # 2

Date:  July 27, 2021 @ 4:30pm – 6pm EST

Topic: Risk management – hazard assessment and risk analysis, managing risks from environment, activities or participants, documenting and analyzing incidents and near misses (Operations Policy and Procedure Manual, Risk Management section)

AT Administration Series #3: Clinical Practices

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Content Outline:

  • Defining clinical approach, clinical targets, and any EBP integration
  • Intake practices
    • Participant screening for appropriateness, including medical
    • Informed consent 
      • Participant expectations
      • Liability release
  • Managing clinical behaviors
    • Responding to SI, HI, aggression, etc. 
  • Intervention planning
    • Session structures and sequencing
    • Session follow up including documentation, post-session checklists

Group Consult # 3

Date:  August 31st, 2021 @ 4:30pm – 6pm EST

Topic:  Defining clinical approach, intake practices, managing clinical behaviors, and intervention planning

AT Administration Series #4: Adventure Activities

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Content Outline:

  • Deciding what activities to offer
    • Types of activities
    • Clinical intention
    • Provider training
    • Process for adding new activities (hazard assessment, research industry standards, etc)
  • Policies and procedures for activities
    • Set up instructions
    • Safety policies and briefing
    • Leading the activity 
      • Participant instructions
      • Monitoring
  • Equipment management
  • Use of third party contractors/partners

Group Consult # 4

Date:  September 28, 2021 @ 4:30pm – 6pm EST

Deciding what activities to offer, policy and procedure development for activities, equipment management, partnering with third party contractors

AT Administration Series #5: Emergency Response 

Content Outline:

  • Duty of care for responding in emergencies
  • Types of emergencies
    • Clinical and/or medical
  • Emergency action plans
    • Crafting emergency action plans
    • Medical training for providers
    • Interface with governmental agencies (EMS, police, land management agencies)
    • Ensuring needed logistical support (adequately informed/trained clients and providers)
    • Serious incident protocols

Group Consult # 5

Topic: Duty of care, types of emergencies, emergency action plans, serious incident protocols (Operations Policy and Procedure, EAP section)

 

AT Administration Series #6: Considerations for Nutrition, Hygiene, Med Management, Transportation and Other Logistics

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Content Outline:

  • Nutrition and water
  • Medication management
  • Hygiene and communicable disease
  • Transportation
  • Facilities and program area use

Topic: Logistics including nutrition, water, medication management, hygiene, and transportation (Operations Policy and Procedure, logistics section) plus closing up.
